Stop Snoring Surgery: So Real Or Surreal?

Who wants to go under the knife? To be more precise, who wants to have a surgery just so snoring would stop which is a matter of fact afflicting about half of all adults. Stop snoring surgery is invasive and must only be considered if snoring becomes life-threatening.

The fundamental basis for performing surgery is to modify structural aberrations that are either life –threatening or to improve the quality of life. These procedures include:

* Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) involves the removal of the uvula (hanging tissue at the back of the mouth that vibrates), and other soft tissues in the soft palate to reduce or stop the collapsibility of the area around the throat.

*CAUP or Cautery Assisted Uvulopalatoplasty is the removal of the uvula through cautery or use of heated electrodes. Comparably has the same effectiveness with LAUP and UPPP but not as painful.

* Radio Frequency Tissue Ablation (RFTA) or Somnoplasty is a procedure that uses radio frequency and shrinks uvula. Radio Frequency Tissue Ablation (RFTA) or Somnoplasty entails shrinking of uvula by use of radio frequency. It is new and still lacks scientific review to claim acceptability.

*Coblation-Channneling makes use of radio frequency to shrink the uvula and is newer than RFTA and much less is known.

*Repose or Tongue Suspension Procedure stitches the back of the tongue to the lower jaw by screws to prevents tongue from falling back to the throat/ airways.

*Genioglossus Tongue Advancement Surgery is a modified Repose surgery which involves the pulling of the bone in the genioglossus, the muscle which keeps the tongue forward, to the jaw by a tiny screw to keep it forward.

*To stop or reduce the vibration of soft tissues in the palate, tiny woven pillars are used as implants to reinforce palate.

* Septoplasty or deviated septum surgery is a procedure that corrects the position of the nasal septum at the middle of the nasal cavity because it causes sinusitis.

* Tracheostomy procedure is the direct opening of the wind pipe and is regarded as a last-resort surgery.

Stop snoring surgery is a life-saving procedure that must be reserved as a last option to address life-threatening snoring.
